Booster Pump

A machine that increases water pressure to satisfy fire flow and minimal water pressure requirements. It can be activated automatically in the event of a loss in water pressure or an increase in demand. A booster station also facilitates water transport to hilltops and higher elevations.

Department of Health Services (DHS)

With more than 5,000 employees, DHS is one of the largest state government departments in California. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)

An organization created to help carry out the initiatives set forth in the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) in 1974 -- the most influential of all federal water regulations. SDWA directs the EPA to establish standards necessary to protect the public from all known harmful contaminants in drinking water and requires the states to accept primary enforcement responsibility for these federal requirements. In 1986 and again in 1996, Congress amended the Act to emphasize that the EPA must continually revise standards based on the latest scientific research and technologies to ensure the public receives the highest quality water possible.

Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCL)

The highest allowable concentration of any substance as set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of Health Services (DHS).

Potable Water

Water that is suitable for drinking. Non-potable water is used for irrigation and agricultural purposes. GWD's water treatment plant ensures that your potable water is always safe and dependable.

Reclaimed Water

Water that can be legally substituted for drinking water in agriculture, landscape irrigationtoleit use, effectively saving drinking water. Reclaimed water is routed to GWD's water reclamation plant, where it is treated and distributed to various golf courses, UC Santa Barbara and other sites for irrigation and agricultural purposes.
